Hurricane Gustav to Hit Gulf Coast as Kids Head Back to School

Tracy McCoy
September 1, 2008, MINNEAPOLIS - With Hurricane Gustav projected to slam into the Gulf Coast today, many kids that don't live in the region are curious about hurricanes. The weather around the nation is effected by the hurricane. Here in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the Republican National Convention has drastically scaled back events due to the hurricane. The temperature here is projected to be in the 90's, with a cold front coming through tonight and temperatures will plunge to the 60's, just in time for the first day of school. Kids have questions about Hurricane Gustav and teachers may want to take the opportunity to teach about hurricanes and severe weather. Listed below are many links to lesson plans and coloring books.

Kids want to know how hurricanes form, how they are named, what damage do hurricanes cause, what is the "eye" of the hurricane, what is "the calm before the storm", how fast are the winds, what are hurricane planes, what do hurricanes look like from space, when are warnings given, where do evacuees go, what happens to the people after they evacuate, what stories do people have if they decided to stay and ride out the storm, how does the hurricane impact weather in different areas, how they can help, and many more. Extreme weather is a fascinating subject for many students.

Here is a list of links to various educational websites.

    Tracy,

What a great twist on the hurricane story! We are currently directly in the path of Hanna and I'm going to pull up some of these resources to teach my kids all about hurricanes. We just moved here last year so this will be our first.
