Tropical Storm Fay is approaching the west coast of Florida and it is August 17 the 39th anniversary of Hurricane Camille which destroyed the Mississippi Gulf Coast. August 29, 2005 hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Gulf coast and the subsequent flooding of New Orleans followed a day later because of the levee failures.
The only thing good about hurricane natural disasters is you know they are coming unlike earthquakes and tornadoes.
Preparations should already be in place by now, but from experience I can tell you a lot of people are not prepared for a hurricane even in Florida.
Living in an area where Katrina is still very fresh it always amazing how ill prepared many people is for another hurricane
Forecasters can predict to some degree what will happen with Fay but no one knows for sure.
I primed my generator back in the end of may and I have plenty of fresh batteries. The freezer is not as full at my house during hurricane season.
The best thing to do for hurricanes is to get one of the many checklists readily available in papers and on the web and get your supplies ready. Hurricanes can pop up very quickly and preparation is the key.
The best thing to do is to have a Disaster Plan in place with a disaster supply kit.
Thankfully, we don't need this every year, but when Katrina struck 3 years ago, being prepared made our ordeal a little less stressful.
