With hurricanes continually knocking down huge structures with alarming regularity, many people are wondering about hurricane preparation. How do you keep your home ready for the high winds? In this article, I will discuss how to prepare for a hurricane.

Preparing for a hurricane requires constant attention throughout the year. You must always keep something known as a Hurricane Preparation Kit. This must always be well stocked and easy to find in the case of a hurricane. Keep things like batteries in a place that will be easy to find once the storm hits. These things are usually things that will be required in the case of any emergency, so you will be prepared in that case, as well.

Make sure to keep a box of things that you would absolutely have to take with you were you to need to evacuate. These things, ideally, would be things that would be completely necessary to re-building your life in the case of a terrible storm. Keep all of your legal documents, copies of financial information, and large receipts from your big purchases. Put some family keepsakes on that list, as well. Know where all of these things are have them in orderly fashion in the case that you need to find them in a hurry.

Get your family together and make sure that everybody recognizes the hurricane plan. If Hurricane Katrina taught us anything, it is that it is important for your entire family to know who to contact out of your area in order to touch base. Make sure that your kids are well enough informed that they can get in touch with your contact person in case of major emergency. Throughout the year, talk about this plan and practice it. Keep it simple for your family and make sure that they recognize the importance of it all. This is especially important for folks who live in danger areas along the coast line.

If you can avoid it, do not try to buy insurance during the middle of hurricane season. During these times, insurance companies will be unlikely to write new policies and they will often charge huge premiums.

If you follow these things throughout the entire year, then you will be prepared when the hurricanes come along. If the families in the Gulf of Mexico would have had plans in place like this, many of them would have been better off.
