A Hush Basset is a unique breed of dog that originated in France. This bread is not a pure breed but instead a breed between a Basset Hound and a Cocker Spaniel. This type of dog breed generally maintains the characteristics of both the Cocker Spaniel and the Basset Hound. They make excellent dogs for those that enjoy hunting, tracking, and even back packing. This breed become registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885.

Description

The Hush Basset is a small and compact breed of dog. The head of the basset is rounded with very expressive eyes. The ears remain long and hang loose while the tail is often docked for shortness. The head on this basset is of medium length and the coat is very silky and thick. General color of the coat is black, brown, and white, or a mixture of all colors. The average height of a Hush Basset is 15 to 17 inches. The average weight is about 40 pounds. The average life span of this breed is between 10 and 15 years with proper care.

Temperament

Hush Bassets do well with families because they enjoy comfortable environments. This breed is generally a great family dog because it tolerates children well. Although it does well with children, they are known to get snippy if they are teased frequently. It socializes well with strangers and other dogs, although some may be aggressive with certain male dogs.

If trained properly, Hush Bassets obey instructions well. However, because they are natural trackers, they often ignore commands when tracking something. The Hush Basset can easily live in an apartment type dwelling if exercised regularly and frequently. Exercise is vital for this breed because they can add weight very quickly. If kept in a large yard, they will stay in shape with little effort from the owner.

Health

Hush Bassets are generally healthy pets is taken care of properly. The largest health concern is obesity. For this reason, it's vital they receive a proper diet and adequate exercise. If obesity occurs a Hush Basset is likely to suffer from leg and spine complications, such as leg or elbow dysphasia.

Because the ears dangle, they are susceptible to ear infections. Glaucoma and skin infections are known to occur as well. Bloat is also a health concern for this breed because of their deep chests. A female will often have a cesarean to give birth.
