Hydrogen Fuel Stations in Connecticut, Vermont

Where to Refuel a Hydrogen-powered Vehicle in Massachusetts

Kellen Cooper
According to information from the Hydrogen Association website, hydrogen fuel gives three times more energy than the same amount of gasoline. It burns cleaner than gasoline, and because it is highly flammable, it takes less energy to ignite it. Hydrogen is available in abundance, and is safe to use. All of these facts make it an ideal fuel.

According to Commuter Cars, some car manufacturers, including BMW and Mercedes, have released various models of cars that run on hydrogen fuel cells.

If you happen to have one of these cars, or are thinking about getting one, undoubtedly you are wondering where you can buy fuel to keep your car going.

Unfortunately, if you live in Massachusetts, you will probably not find a hydrogen fueling station close to home. In the National Hydrogen Association database, there are no listings for either operational or planned hydrogen fuel stations in Massachusetts. Luckily, according to the Hydrogen Association, hydrogen is sold in portable cylinders, so if you are willing to drive to a neighboring state, you can stock up on fuel for your car.

There are two operational stations in Connecticut, and one in Vermont. These may be fairly close to where you live, depending on which part of Massachusetts you are located in.

EVermont Hydrogen Fueling Station - Burlington
645 Pine Street
Burlington, VT 05401

EVermont is a non-profit research organization founded by Howard Dean when he was govenor of Vermont. They began working on the hydrogen refueling project in 2004. You can check out their website for more information. The fueling station is listed as private, because the research organization is a private-public entity.

Hopefully in the next few years, more hydrogen fueling stations will open up in Massachusetts. Called by some the "perfect fuel" it makes sense that environmentally-conscious Massachusetts residents will begin to demand sources for hydrogen fuel for their cars.
