Hydrogen Peroxide Uses

The Little Brown Bottle: Not Just for Scrapes and Cuts Anymore

Sheryl Jester
Most of us have one of those brown bottles of hydrogen peroxide in our medicine cabinet. Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as a disinfectant for the occasional scrape or cut. We like to see it bubble up and kill the germs. What a lot of people don't realize is the wide variety of other uses for this three percent solution that is available in grocery and drug stores everywhere. It is inexpensive, at around $1 for a 16 ounce bottle, and is a powerful bleaching agent. It is composed of water and oxygen and kills microorganisms by oxidizing them. And, as an added benefit, it is good for the environment.

Over the counter hydrogen peroxide usually comes in a 3% solution. It breaks down quickly when it is exposed to light so it usually sold in brown bottles to filter out the light. There are 30 - 35% strengths available for commercial use, but those can be dangerous if not used correctly. For the purposes of this article we are talking about the over the counter 3% hydrogen peroxide and 97% water solution. Some uses for this sometimes referred to miracle solution are listed below:

As a mouthwash or 'gargle' - mix half water and half peroxide solution, hold in your mouth a few minutes. Do not use more than once a day. This will help keep canker sores away and will keep your teeth whiter. Use instead of mouthwash. Extended use is not recommended.

Toothbrush maintenance - Let your family's toothbrushes soak in peroxide overnight to keep them germ free.

In the laundry - Pour and gently rub on blood stains to remove them. Instead of bleach, pour a little hydrogen peroxide in your washer for brighter clothes.

In the kitchen - Put a little on your dishrag or make a spray bottle of the 3% solution. Wipe off counter and table tops and appliances. Hydrogen peroxide will disinfect surfaces and give your kitchen a fresh, clean smell.

In the shower - keep a spray bottle of 3% peroxide in your shower for spraying down the shower to help kill bacteria and viruses.

For your house and garden plants - Mix 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide in 1 quart water. Water and mist your plants with this solution.

For fresh fruits, vegetables and salad greens - To prolong freshness and to clean before use prepare a solution of salt, ΒΌ cup of hydrogen peroxide in a sink full of cold water. Wash your fruits, vegetables and salad greens and rinse with cold water.
