Hydroxycut Removed from Market Due to Death

According to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration Hydroxycut products are being recalled from the market. All users of Hydroxycut are warned to stop using the products immediately after one death has been reported due to liver failure after using the product. There have also been reports of at least 23 people who have suffered serious liver injury and damage, some that have even resulted in subsequent liver transplants.

Other health problems that have been attributed to Hydroxycut include cardiovascular disorders, seizures, and a certain condition that leads to damage of the muscles called rhabdomyolysis. If you suspect that you have any health related issues as a result of using Hydroxycut, you are advised to see your health care provider immediately. Hydroxycut was sold at a number of stores, including health and muscle specialty stores such as GNC, to pharmacies and retail suppliers such as Walgreens, Wal-Mart, and grocery stores. The recall is effective immediately, beginning on May 1, 2009.

Hydroxycut is a dietary aid that has gained a reputation as being a weight loss supplement that aids in increasing metabolism and building muscle. Ads for Hydroxycut are commonly seen on television and in magazines, depicting a man or woman who used to be out of shape, then reveals their newly 'cut' body with defined muscles and increased definition. The product was used frequently by those who adhered to low carb diets or were on weight training and muscle building programs.

The people who reported liver damage while taking Hydroxycut used the recommended daily dosage and did not exceed the product's recommendations. Hydroxycut products are manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences Inc. of Oakville, Ontario and are distributed by Iovate Health Sciences. Iovate has agreed to recall the entire line of Hydroxycut products, even though liver illness has not been reported with all of the products.
