Hymn from Isaiah 53

Who is This Ugliest of Men?

Andrew Lohr
Hymn from Isaiah 53
Tune "Martyrdom," by Hugh Wilson (died A.D. 1824), harmonized by Robert A. Smith (died A.D. 1829), public domain, sometimes used for "Alas, and did my Savior bleed?" Or other Common Meter tune ("Amazing Grace" 's rhythm).

Who is this ugliest of men,
this root in baren ground?
He is the Savior for mankind
in whom I safe am found.

We all have wandered off like sheep;
what can for us be done?
God's Holy wrath at all our sin
burns out upon his Son.

He silent is; we murder him;
what can he do hereby?
Obtain for us eternal life
in peace with God Most High.

As you can see, this hymn takes some thoughts from Isaiah 53 and sings them; it does not try to set the whole chapter to music.
A modern song, under copyright I'm sure, that does the same, that I only recall hearing once, but that has stuck with me for more than 20 years, is by James Ward, chief musician of New City Fellowship in Chattanooga. It begins "The reSULTS of his SUFfering he shall SEE / he shall be SAtisfied..." Hunt down Mr Ward, or his agent, and enjoy [some of] his music. My favorite James Ward songs are his "Hold me, Jesus" [not the only song with that title], "Morning Sun," "No bad news." Each of those song titles comes from the chorus; the respective first lines are "There was a tiny lamb who liked to play," "On the first day of the week," and "He's a happy one who fears the Lord." The 3rd is based on part of Psalm 112; and, as I just wrote, I'm sure Mr Ward has them under copyright, so take care of his property. He earns his living by music; 20 years or so ago I heard him describe New City's music program then as an 80 thousand dollar music program on a 30,000 dollar budget. (The budget has gone up since.) I can give away my music, but not his.
So here's my hymn from Isaiah 53, and a possibility of a more modern one if you go look for it, and a mention of some other music I like that maybe you'd like too.
