Hype: Halo 3 Video Game

Microsoft need not create a hype machine for the highly anticipated Halo 3, which is to be released sometime in the fourth quarter 2007, most likely early-to-mid November. Halo 3 already promises to be a monster based on its name and track record alone (being the premier console first person shooter and arguably comparable to the amazing first person shooters seen on PCs).

The release of Halo 3, currently slated for November 1st 2007, might end up rivaling the launch of the two systems we saw this past 2006, in that it will be released in three different versions: the normal $59.99 edition, the $69.99 Collector's edition, and the almighty Legendary edition which will run you $99.99 if you plan on buying it. While most gamers will probably be happy with the normal edition, the two upgraded editions will contain most of what you expect. Making of featurettes, the addition of all past cinematics from the past two games are to be included. The Legendary edition will include a Halo Spartan MJOLNIR Mark VI Helmet Replica, albeit not large enough to wear as Master Chief would.

Fans of the series will be thrust back into the throws of the epic storyline that unfolded during Halo and Halo 2, only to be taken further in the third installment. However, whether or not you enjoy the notion, this will be the last Halo game... in this story arc. Master Chief's grandiose adventure will draw to its inevitable close and we can only wait and see just how it's going to end.

In addition to the bevy of weapons that will come to Master Chief's disposal, a bubble shield was shown in a CGI commercial, with strength capable of withstanding a covenant mortar. Whether or not this will actually be a game play element is still subject to speculation, but it appears that it will be a part of the game, which will provide for some interesting new game play elements.

Regardless of whether or not the new device will be instrumental, Veterans of the series can look forward to the same game play that has garnered the Halo series numerous awards over the past year since its inception.

Microsoft also seems to be strategically launching games during the fourth quarter in order to dominate during the holiday season. Those in need of proof over this need look no further back than Gears of War, which was released to critical and financial acclaim. Halo 3 is looking to do exactly the same thing in 2007 and for all of its hype, it appears to be one of the titles that have the opportunity to do better than most of us are expecting it to.
