What is Hyzaar?

Hyzaar is primarily a medication developed to treat high blood pressure through a combination of a vasodilator and diuretic, Losartan potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide, respectively. This is accomplished through the blocking of the hormone that typically constricts blood vessels and increased output of urine, which helps to lower blood pressure.

How to Effectively Use Hyzaar.

For the medication to be effective one must take on a regular basis so that blood pressure drops over time, taken as directed by one's physician. Hyzaar treatment may take weeks to fully work so even if one is feeling healthy don't stop taking the medication. One should set up a regular time schedule for taking this medication in order for this to be an effective treatment. Missed dosages should be taken unless it is near to the next dosage time. This medication can be taken with or without food, and it is also important to store Hyzaar in a tight container at room temperature, and should be kept away from light.

Important warnings about Hyzaar.

Hyzaar has several important warnings that might not make this the most effective treatment for some. Since this medication works with two drugs to lower blood high blood pressure, both drugs exhibit some side effects have been noted to include dizziness and upper respiratory infection. In addition, if potential users have liver and kidney disease, diabetes, gout and lupus erythematosus, Hyzaar should be prescribed with caution. Similarly, if one is prone to allergies or bronchial asthma there may be an increased risk. Since this is a medication to gradually decrease blood pressure through increased evacuation of body fluids, severe diarrhea, vomiting, sweating and exercise in hot weather may cause blood pressure to drop too low. Also avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while taking this medication. Always call one's physician if any symptoms arise while taking this medication.

There are several possible drug interactions that potential users should check with their physician before taking Hyzaar: Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Corticosteriods, other diuretics, Indomethacin, Insulin, Ketoconazole, Lithium, Narcotic painkillers, Nonsterodial anti-inflammatory drugs, other blood pressure treatments, oral diabetes drugs, potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, Sulfaphenzaole, Troleandomycin. Do not take Hyzaar if pregnant or breastfeeding without explicit physician directions. As that this medication can cause injury or death to unborn children. Similarly Hyzaar will pass from mother to child through mother's milk.

Dosages for Adults.

Hyzaar is availilble in these two formats; 50-12.5 (50 miligrams losartan & 12.5 milligrams hydrochlorothiazide) and 100-25 (100 miligrams losartan & 12.5 miligrams hydrochlorothiazide). Also, Hyzaar has not been researched for treating children with hypertension.
