In the United States about 1 in 3 adults has a condition called hypertension or high blood pressure.1 This condition usually has no symptoms. You can have it for years without knowing it. During this time it can cause damage to your heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body. This is why it is called the silent killer.

What exactly is blood pressure? It is the force of the blood pushing against the arteries as your heart pumps.
One of the most dangerous aspects of hypertension is that you may not know that you have it. There are generally no symptoms of high blood pressure unless it is extremely high. Close to 1/3 of people who have hypertension are not aware of it. The only way to find out if you have this condition is to have your blood pressure checked regularly. If your blood pressure is extremely high, there may be certain symptoms to look out for, including: Chest pain, Difficulty breathing, sudden Fatigue or confusion, Irregular heartbeat, changes in vision, headache and sometimes blood in the urine. If any of these symptoms are present see a doctor immediately. You could be in hypertensive crisis.

There are ways to prevent or control hypertension such as limiting your sodium intake to approximately 2,400 milligrams a day and reducing your meat and fish intake to no more then 2 servings a day. If your carrying around some extra pounds, lose them . This will be beneficial to your overall health. Try Exercising at least 30 minutes per day it can significantly reduce your blood pressure. If you smoke you need to quit since smoking is a culprit in causing high blood pressure and heart disease. The most important thing for you to do is see your doctor regularly and have your blood pressure checked. If you are diagnosed with hypertension, your doctor will prescribe medication if it is beyond a mild high blood pressure or if they suspect you won't follow the diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes they advise. If you were to go to an herbalist asking for advice about hypertension, you might be be told to eat four stalks of celery each day. Celery is said to reduce a particular stress hormone in the blood. this allows the vessels to expand giving the blood more room to flow reducing the over all blood pressure.

A diagnosis of hypertension isn't a death sentence. It just means that you will need to make some lifestyle changes and work with your doctor on keeping it under control.
