1. Environment. Pick a quiet, comfortable place where you can relax and not be distracted. Bedrooms are great places for hypnosis. Keep lights dim or off to limit any distractions.
2. Focus. Reaching a hypnotic state is more effective if your eyes are closed but it can be difficult to focus when you are not looking at a focal point. If you rather, create on in your mind's eye by visualizing something on which you can focus.
3. Comfort. Wear comfortable clothing that will not constrict or distract you in any way. Be sure you have eaten and had something to drink. Use the restroom before you begin.
4. Relax. While hypnosis is the ultimate state of relaxation (besides sleep), it is important to be relaxed before you start with the hypnotic suggestions. If you are experiencing stress, are not well rested or had too much caffeine, you will not reach a hypnotic state.
5. Caution. Hypnosis can be a wonderful tool but it can also be dangerous to dive into someone's subconscious. If you are a beginner, do not attempt hypnosis with anyone with an mental health disorders or serious emotional trauma. Leave hypnosis for these individuals to the professionals as you may find yourself treading in areas for which you are unprepared and unskilled.
For beginners, hypnosis can be a very exciting idea because of the potential to enter into another person's psyche for a short time. If you are the one being hypnotized, you may find you are more receptive to change in your life because of experiencing a hypnotic state. If hypnosis does not work for you when you first attempt it, do not give up. Hypnosis' benefits far outweigh the temporary frustration you may feel with being unable to achieve the perfect hypnotic state on your first try.
