How would you go about selling your soul if you could? Would you advertise online, in the paper or maybe on Craig's list? And what is it worth to you? How much would you ask for your immortal soul? This would prove to be a very personal task of deciding what your soul is worth. Before I could even contemplate selling my soul, I would have to examine, is a soul an entity that really belongs to me, and therefore is it mine to sell or give away?
Personally I do not think that I would be able to determine a price for my soul. Even though it is slightly tarnished I believe that it is worth more to me than any monetary or material trade I would ever receive. So just what is your immortal soul in terms of defining it? If I were to define what a soul is, I would say that it is what makes up who I am the spirit of my being placed into me at the time of my creation, and destined to leave at my departure. The soul in my opinion defines not only who you are but, also what you are a man, woman or animal. I also question can anyone really own a soul of another person besides the one in which it resides?
It seems that even though we may not realize it, we do sell our souls or portions of them to many things or people in our lives. We sell our souls for a better job, our religions, families, the chance to go to college, and possibly for our soul mate. We accomplish this by sacrificing who we are, compromising our values and part of our spirit that comprises who we are and our dreams within. I am not sure that this is inevitable, whether you believe in a soul or not, I believe that as we give up our original intentions and desires we lose sight of ourselves.
So how do we avoid selling our souls or ourselves to monetary and material icons? This is difficult, as it is not the same for everyone. For some people, it may be holding out for more, not accepting a compromise or making a sacrifice of their goals. For me personally, selling my soul meant that I would be forced to continue working at a job I hated, driving a miserable commute daily and for what, more money and less time at home?
I decided that enough was enough. I was tired of selling out to be part of the status quo. I wanted to make myself happy and spend more time with my family. My soul had been sold for the last time, and I was tired of the misery that accompanied the selling of my soul. So I began to research careers that I could do from home, while still making a living and having the ability to craft my own schedule. I can say that while I have given up a large salary, I am happier that I can be at home for the time being.
I changed my outlook on life drastically. Why did I need to have a brand new car, house and matching accessories? I realized that I could have all of those things along with the matching debt if I really wanted, but why? I have come to understand that monetary and material goods have a way of controlling people. I found that instead of working towards my dreams, I was trying to work towards fulfilling societal ideals. Once I began to focus on my family and our values, I found that I was much happier.
Life is too short to worry about what other people think and in some cases what they expect from you. You must not give up on your dreams or self preservation of your soul; it may be your downfall or the destruction of your happiness.
