Hyundai Records 13.5% Decline in Car Sales

Hyundai Motor India Ltd., the second largest Indian car manufacturer, reports a 13.5% decline in domestic sales. The company sold 21,016 units in January 2009 as against 24,301 units sold in the corresponding month last fiscal.

However, the export rose by 20.9% with 16,200 units sold in January as compared to 13,399 units sold in January 2008. Overall, Hyundai reported sales of 35,096 units in the A2 Segment comprising Santro, i10, Getz and i20; 2,057 units in A3 Segment that includes Accent and Verna; and 62 units in the A5 Segment comprising Sonata Transform. In the SUV segment with the Tucson, the company has sold only 1 unit.

Senior Vice-President of Hyundai Motor India, said, "2009, as we had predicted, is going to be a very challenging year for the entire automotive industry. However, for HMIL the launch of the i20 has been very positive and in the first month itself we have bookings of over 2,500 units for the domestic market." He also added that the new car Hyundai i20 has received an overwhelming response from the buyers and over 6,500 units have been shipped in the global car market.

Hyundai desires to maintain its market position in the coming months.
