At our house, we don't really eat breakfast together, because everyone is on their own schedule. But we often have fried eggs and toast as a quick, cheap supper. (As it is one of the few things I cook well, it gives my husband a break from cooking!) Every once in a very long while we also have a bit of bacon on the side. Generally speaking, I only like bacon in small doses (extra crispy please), on the side with eggs and toast, or in a BLT. So it is really nice to find a bacon that stands alone as well as Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon does.
Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon comes in clear packaging with an insert of navy blue, tangerine orange, and dark yellow. On sale, it cost under two dollars for a 16-ounce package. The back of the package gives three cooking options: microwaving, frying, and baking. My daughter and I prefer fried bacon, while my husband prefers baked, so I usually make a bit both ways. (I wonder if one method of cooking is healthier than the others.) The back also tells us that 2 pieces of fried bacon have 90 calories and 12 percent of your fat for the day, and15 percent of your saturated fat for the day. There's also 12 percent of your sodium. The only nutritional plus to this food is 4 grams of protein. But bacon has never been something to turn to for it's nutritional value. Bacon is all about comfort and flavor. And in that department, Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon really delivers.
Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon is sweet and smoky, as the name implies. Many kinds of bacon are too salty for my taste, and Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon is pretty salty. But the sweet taste of this bacon balances out the salt nicely. (I have always been one to dunk my sausages in maple syrup when we have pancakes, so it's no surprise that I also prefer my bacon a bit sweet.
The only problem Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon is that it's hard to stop at two pieces! It's a good thing we don't get Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon very often, or I'd probably gain back the weight I've recently lost. But for a treat, I really recommend Hy-Vee Sweet Smoked Bacon.
Enjoy!
