I Am, a Black Woman

A Debutante Poem (Rights of Passage Prose)

NM
The way you describe me does not matter

God took from his crayon box a shade of brown

And he painted my lemon, caramel or charcoal skin

He used a thick pencil to form my lips

And he chose a threat that curls for my tresses

Your labels will not change that I am a colored girl

I am intelligent and I am as bright as the sun

I am compassionate like the grace of Gods love

I am blessed and highly favored

I am your sister and I will hold you up or catch you before you fall

I am your daughter and I will care for you in the sunset of your Life

I am your friend I will honor and respect your trust

I am a vital part of my community I am concerned

I am an activist I will not turn away when you need my help

I am a student I will absorb the knowledge of your wisdom

I am a teacher; I will reach back and pull forward those behind me

I am me, a young woman ready to accept the torch and make my debutInto womanhood.
