I Am Blessed and You Are Not

Alfonso Coley
I have often wondered why many Christian people often refer to themselves as being blessed. How does a person sum up that they are truly blessed, is it the material possessions they have, is it good health they are referring to, or is it something they feel about being blessed? Personally I do not feel I am blessed or cursed, I more so feel that my blessings come from helping others whenever I can, for me this is what being blessed is all about. Even though the tough economic times have brought about change the way that I go about my daily business, I humble myself on the idea of being blessed.

Each person has their way of greeting each other in terms of cordiality, some people greetings deal with hello how are you, and others are more subtle. But what I found very amusing is how people respond to a greeting. There have been many times that I have greeted someone and their response would be I'm blessed. As I started to think about this I became perplexed on why many people feel that they are blessed. This also began me to question why I have never responded to a greeting with I am blessed. From the highs and lows in my life I have never considered myself blessed. As a matter of a fact I have never thought about myself being blessed in terms of being and learning to be a Christian man.

What does the Bible say about being blessed in terms of how Christian men and women may shed some light on a delicate subject concerning what being blessed truly means. "Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field." Deuteronomy, Chapter 23, verse 3. It would seem that God takes favor in the good deeds we partake in, and the services we provide for each other.

Is it right for any man or woman to consider their self blessed, or should we consider the blessings we receive as a gift by being obedient to God's law according to Deuteronomy, chapter 23, verse 2. "And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God." It may be more appropriate for Christian men and women to say that God has blessed me, rather than proclaiming oneself to be blessed. It almost seems premature to consider one's self blessed; our blessings should be a silent testimony of the life we lead. Christian men and women do not need to profess their blessings to others; it almost seems like boasting of one's prosperity.

As we greet each other let us be humble in our blessings, and let our actions and words be put into truth not fallacy.

I think it is good for people to use the greeting I am blessed. As a Christian it simply means I am blessed to have the promise of eternal life through God's only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. In Him we are truly blessed.

Alfonso, This is much deeper thought than I am used to. I will have to think about it. Christian or not, I still think that it is ok for people to feel blessed and to thank G-d for that.

You convinced me. While I don't say "I'm blessed," I never had a problem with others saying it before. Good article.
