A man is seemingly the last man around and he is searching, searching, searching for a cure to a disease that had slaughtered millions and turned thousands into monsters of the night. I Am Legend.
I Am Legend gets a B...close to a B- than a B+ kind of B. Will Smith is never a disappointment, but his choice in movies sure have been. This is one of the winter movies I listed that were not going to be as interesting as the trailer showed and it was true. It wasn't nearly as interesting as it could have been. It was a bit slow and of course that is to be apparent because he's almost the only person in the entire movie.
They've done this before with Cast Away, except Cast Away worked and this sort of fails. There were clever scenes, yes, with the mannequins and the dog along with funny moments that Will Smith can almost always pull off. There is a scene that would sadden animal lovers. You've been warned if you are one of those. The ending was a bit of a let down. It was very climatic at the right point and then instead of lowering itself to a smooth landing it dropped as if it were a bowling ball in the hands of an inexperienced bowler. It left me wanting and when a movie does that it ruins the over all feel it strives to convey---completeness.
I've said this time and time again how important the ending is for the entire movie. So I am Legend could have very well been better if the ending gave way to betterment. Instead it did not and it gave way to hollowness which just made everything prior a waste of time. Of course that is a huge source of irritation with me.
The other movies that were made about this as well as the story I have not seen nor read. I cannot compare them to say if this was better or worse. I can say that the idea of I am Legend is slightly interesting. I am very sick of, however, apocalyptic things happening in movies and really sick of them being ground zeroed in New York City. I don't care how exciting it is to see destruction in New York. It's growing very boring to me. I saw a poster, at the movie theater, that shows another movie with a damaged Statue of Liberty on it. Seriously, Hollywood, NO MORE!
I am Legend is a decent movie. It had moments that were good and Will Smith doesn't disappoint. If you are excited about it go and see it. If you have doubts in your mind based on what I've said about it and what you think because of the trailers, don't see it. I predict that next weekend I am Legend will drop to third and that Alvin and the Chipmunks will keep their second place. Because I believe that there are others out there like me that are telling people that I am Legend is not as good as some are stating and those people will be listened to and it will significantly lower the movie's income.
I am not going to be buying this movie and I will not really want to ever seen this movie again. I was not disappointed by it because my expectations were met, oddly. I just had a bit of hope that maybe I was wrong and what I thought was going to be could be blown out of the water. But instead I was right and the ending was just icing on the cake. Yes this movie really needed a Wilson. No joke.
