I Am Not the Color, but a Person

Black History Month Poem

This revolution is not the end all solution,
But it will be televised or twittered or facebooked or myspaced to ease the confusion,
The time of information provides better education,
Than books and strange looks,
Leaving people questioning their own beliefs-

I was there when it wasn't televised,
when all we had was each other my brotha,
Close like we both had the same mothers,
That was the community that I know and saw
It wasn't about poppin and snappin,
No, the revolution was not filled with American Idol and B.E.T.
Only the souls that parented who were the sons and daughters
of those who had marched on D.C.
The revolution brought about real change we could believe in
Instead of change that is bleeding

Therefore, the new revolution will be a revival
We will progress and proceed and will move forward
I will live and not just survive
I will flurish and not just thrive
I will plead guilty to wanting to be more than YOUR color,
More than your sterotype,
More than "staying in my place"
More than your "half-breed" comments,
I will lift my hands to God and stay focused,
keep my faith and maintain my dominence ,
Over this thing you call color,
this importance,

I will not celebrate being black but celebrate my culture,
For the revolution will not talk about color-themed events but culural themed,
contributors
Those who saw no color but community,
Who faced color issues with immunity,

Yes, I embody the revolution
The solution,
The resolution,
The end of the color illusion,

I am not a color, but a person.
