Over the years I have picked up at least 5 different email addresses. I have a Myspace account, a Facebook account, and there are several blogs that I read regularly. I do not have the time to keep up with everything but being a competitive person I was inspired by Associated Content to add Twitter to my site rotation.
Learning to Use Twitter and Decoding the Twitter Jargon
I work as a Systems Manager in Information Technology so one would think that I would instantly pick up all I needed to know about Twitter within the first ten minutes of being on the page. The fact is I hate technology. All of my technology energy goes into managing and fixing technology at work, staying up to date on the latest technology that could be useful, and learning more about integrating technology with higher education. At the end of the day the last thing I want to do is learn the syntax of Twitter.
One of the first things I noticed when I subscribed to other writers' twitter accounts was the use of codes. In my world PT means potty training. I wondered what RT could mean but I won't embarrass myself by publishing my guesses. Associated Content was the first place I searched to find what all this meant.
AC Jelena's articles Getting Started on Twitter and Twitter Vocabulary helped me decode the Twitter syntax.
Twitter can be used for more than letting people know you are going potty.
I was very excited when I found Beth Callahan's article Celebrity Twitter Directory. Unfortunately it did not include my biggest crush at the moment - Nine Inch Nail's Bass Player Justin Meldal-Johnsen. It does include many mainstream celebrities so it is worth a look if you like to stalk your crushes as much as I do.
The next article I found was Carly Hart's article Get Swine Flu Updates Via Twitter from the CDC. It was not until I read this article that it occurred to me that Twitter could be a powerful communication tool. I am considering using Twitter as a tool to deliver important messages to the staff, faculty, and students at the University where I work.
Results of my Twitter Experiment
My experiment in the world of Twitter will continue. As of this writing I have 48 followers and have put out 29 tweets. Many people say, "I don't do Twitter" when I ask them to subscribe to me. I am subscribed to 68 very interesting people. I have had four of my Associated Content articles re-tweeted and I have tweeted links to 9 Associated Content articles. I cannot remember how many articles I have clicked on but I have found amazing authors through other Associated Content Contributors' tweets.
To the masses: If you are interested in random thoughts, links to outstanding articles, and stupid jokes I encourage you to subscribe to me. You can subscribe to my Twitter account by going to http://www.twitter.com/morgan2dope.

Post a CommentThanks. I've been using Twitter for a few months now (using my football club's name) but I still don't understand how retweets work. With your useful links I hope now to overcome the problem.
great job! hugz cj
Excellent. I'll check out the peeps you've mentioned. I'm into Twitter bigtime. facebook and MySpace I just didn't see as promoting my creative stuff much. I think it's the RT thing on Twitter which makes the big difference.
