I Could Never Be Your Woman - a Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
I Could Never Be Your Woman is a romantic comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Rosie, a forty-something divorcee with a tween daughter. Paul Rudd is Adam, an unknown actor who lands a bit part on the sitcom that Rose writes for. Saoirse Ronan plays Izzie, Rosie's very talented and likeable daughter. Rosie and Paul develop a romantic relationship that is sabotaged by Rosie's own fears of dating a younger man. Warning: My movie review contains plot spoilers.

Thank goodness I completely disregarded the DVD back cover description. The back description said something like a mother falls for a younger man while dealing with Mother Nature messing with their fates. I thought that sounded really stupid but thank goodness that is not how the movie is like at all. Tracey Ullman plays Mother Nature but she really doesn't mess with their fates at all. I got the impression that Mother Nature is just a cynical figment of Rosie's imagination. I like Tracey Ullman but she was just annoying in this role. Luckily Mother Nature doesn't get much screen time.

Amy Heckerling wrote and directed this movie. She also wrote and directed one of my favorite movies, Clueless. Apparently Amy Heckerling likes to use the same actors over and over again. Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Twink Caplan and Wallace Shawn also had parts in Clueless. I have the completely useless ability to remember what movies actors have acted in no matter how small the part. If only that was a jeopardy category. Anyway, Amy Heckerling has written herself another winner. I Could Never Be Your Woman is a really great romantic comedy.

Paul Rudd and Michelle Pfeiffer had great chemistry together. Finally, a movie that has a believable May-December romance. Jon Lovitz plays Rose's ex-husband. He was hilarious and it was fun to see an ex-husband character written to be likeable but still annoying in that ex-husband way. My favorite performance was by Saorise Ronan, the young lady who plays the daughter. She is a very good actress and I loved her talent show scene. I am sure she will become a very popular actress soon.

Overall the story was cute and entertaining the whole 90 minutes. I can't find one single thing that I didn't enjoy about the movie. I consider it a keeper and plan on watching it again. I give the movie 5 out of 5 stars.
