I Couldn't Save You - a Poem About Drug Addiction

I Couldn't Save You

Rachael A. Lund
Confronting your addiction
I grab your arm
fresh track marks screaming in my face

You throw words of denial and anger
between us
not wanting my help or the truth

I speak reality of the path you're on
but my words fall
shattered and unreceived

I failed...

Trying to rescue you
once more
from the world of drugs and abuse

You are convinced you'll be fine
as you smile
past the bruises on your face

I offer to take you away to safety
but your were married
to your lovers heroin, crack and cocaine

I failed...

Years later you were found
dead
face down on your bathroom floor

A fresh track mark on your arm from
the one you loved
that took your life in the end

I face your death with broken tears
on my face
knowing I couldn't save you

Sad but truly touching- I experienced something close in an outreach program- the girl was 19 crack addicted, pregnant and had four other children in state services. She seemed to be getting better- but she died overdosed after the 5th baby was born.

So sad. I hope it helps someone. Excellent work!
