I Crawled: A Poem

Scott Bauer
I crawled across the sandy beachhead

I crawled to the water's edge

But I could touch it not

It slipped away from my grasp

Like time from an old man's hand

Or memories from his mind

Years gone by, moon chasing sun

Stars chasing the moon. I age.

Yet here I crawl and rest and crawl

Grasping, gasping for the dark sea's edge

It teases my brain, coming near to extended fingers

Then fleeing again as my heart leaps

Never will its peacefulness be mine

Oft how I wish it

No sun on my back, no weight

No mortals tearing, pulling me away from it

I fear I shall only reach it when my ears go deaf

And my eyes go dark and my bones are hardened ash

Then and only then

Will peace be mine
