I Didn't Think You Knew

But Somehow You Did Mom

April Higney
There were many things I didn't think you knew.
In my youth, sometimes angry, I disobeyed.
Sometimes I blamed you,
for the foolish choices I made.

There were many things I hid from you.
In my youth, afraid of what you might have said.
I didn't think you knew,
but somehow you did, in my actions you must have read.

I didn't want you to know someone hurt me,
hid the tears, didn't speak of for years.
I didn't want you to know how foolish I was,
as I sat in a hollow shell, so many fears.

There were many things I didn't think you knew,
in my youth never asked you, sometimes hard to talk.
Sometimes I blamed myself,
many times alone, I'd think, take a walk.

How could you know,
I hid the bruises beneath long sleeves?
I tried to hold my head up,
but eyes casted down at fallen leaves.

I didn't think you knew,
but somehow you did.
I didn't say a word.
Nearly four years of my life, from pain I hid.

There were many things I didn't think you knew,
but somehow you knew all along,
In my youth sometimes angry, I disobeyed,
but never once did you blame me, for the foolish choices I made.
You understood, because you had gone through much yourself, you could.
I didn't know. I didn't know you would.
You helped me understand I did nothing wrong.

Now well beyond youth,
I know some things I never knew,
I didn't think you knew,
but somehow you did,
you protected me,
and you know, as you always have,
I'm sorry for ever blaming you.
