When his mother came to see him, he would tell her of all the great and grand places he had flown to that day. She would often stare off into confusion, thinking he was becoming delusional from the medication, and final stages of the disease. She just couldn't understand for the life of her how he could be so free in his mind and spirit while in such a state of physical captivity.
One night as his mother sat with him, he said, "mom I really can fly, don't you believe me"? She said yes, but in a spirit of disbelief. He told her that there was an angel that came to see him often, reminding him that he could soar anywhere he wanted. An angel that encouraged him and gave him peace. The angel told him he could be anything in the world that he wanted to be, so the boy told the angel that he wanted to be a golden dove. After sitting a couple of hours with him, the boys mother kissed him on the forehead and went home for the night.
When the boy went to sleep that night, the angel of the Lord came to him and asked him if he was ready to fly. Yes, the little boy said excitedly. The angel took the boy's hand and off they went into the midnight sky. The hospital called his mother in the middle of the night and told her she needed to immediately come to the hospital because he was having an uncontrollable seizure. She rushed there as fast as she could, but she was to late. Her son had already died.
She sat in her son's empty room crying all through the night, just staring at the empty bed, not wanting to believe that he was gone. She cried herself to sleep uncontrollably, until one of the nurses came in to awaken her. As she began to gather herself and her sons belongings, she noticed a note that her son had left for her.
It said,
Don't worry mom, the angel of the Lord came to me last night and gave me the wings I always knew I had.
We are going to fly home together to see the Lord.
I'm okay and I Love you, just look for me in the sun rays and I'll be there...... always.
As her eyes welled up with tears, she went to look out of the hospital window one final time, and to her amazement she saw a radiant golden dove flying through the sun rays of the sky. It shimmered and glistened within the sunlight like nothing she had ever seen before. It flew right over to the window, bringing a sudden peace over her, and then flew away just as fast as it came. As she smiled to herself, she heard the soft voice of her son in her heart saying , "I can fly"
