I Found Myself Standing in the Sands of Time

Matthew Shively
I found myself standing in the sands of time
Looking to my past wondering about my crimes
I have not broken any laws and is not what I mean
But the crimes of life through which I have done and seen

Have I hurt anyone's feelings through times past
Did I do something to someone that put their heart in a cast
Can I remember lying about something so immense
Giving the feeling of pain that could have been so intense

I know in my heart I never meant to do any wrong
Maybe it is me that doesn't stand so strong
Does pain stand in my way of happiness
Why do I question my likeness

Life can be full of hurt and pain
But it is up to us all to forgive and not restrain
For regrets will only grow bold as time goes on
And will be hard to dismiss and only prolong

Do I lament on things I have done to others
Of course I do, I am human with a heart that smothers
Love runs rampant through my entire sole
And it is my love I let console

No one is perfect this I know true
We all make mistakes most of which we did not mean to do
What would life be like if everyone was faultless
No humor, fear, pleasure, drama, or sorrowfulness

As I stood in the sands of time
I know looking back I have led a life with no crime
Crime in the sense of living with no regrets
Because I have learned to forgive and forget

Now I challenge you to stand in the sands of time
Look to your past and see if you have committed any crime
Not broken laws, this is not what I mean
But your crimes of life through which you have done and seen

Know you are not perfect as none of us are
But only humans that make mistakes that stick to us like tar
Look to those crimes; set them loose
And forgive and forget as you so choose

I dedicate this poem to everyone out there as we have all done things in our past and present that we sometimes regret, but it is up to us all to learn how to make our amends in life in order to live free and happy.
