I Hate Mornings

Free Verse

Louisa Burgess
I hate mornings I truly do
yes I know that sounds cliche and trivial but I do

For years I woke at 6:30 sharp more or less
and jumped into action as mothers do
I was never good at the breakfast routine
protein bars, shakes, maybe an english muffin
cold cereal too
Sunday morning break out the eggs and bacon
that's about it but everyone survived
then clothes for school
remember the homework notebook
yelling, coaxing to hurry
the school bus stop social event
back home shower and dress for work
running, running, so as to not be late

I hate the morning
it seems so harsh
the light is bright and the air so cool

The morning forces an early bedtime
can barely keep eyes open for the news
sleep in the evening seems so unnatural to me
the world is awake working or having fun
maybe it's the New Yorker in me
but I seem to wake up some time after three
I've put it to a test now that there are no children to dress
no job to go to in the early am
My natural biology has taken me over
sleep sometimes doesn't come at this age either
so I sleep through the morning knowing full well
that I'm missing the chatter of people on the go
I miss the morning song birds and the sun rising in the east
the dew on the flowers and the smell of morning air
the first pot of coffee is lost on me and
the morning news waits until after three

I hate mornings
and they hate me
my voice doesn't work well until noon you see

I'm cranky when awakened
and please don't talk to me
two cups of coffee are required
the newspaper, tv or the computer
and then we'll see depending on the time of day
my mind will work just fine sometime after three
who after all wants to deal with the grumpies
so please let me sleep
until my natural biology opens my eyes and I can see
until then I'll argue first and ask questions later
you surely don't want to be in my way

I hate the morning
give me the afternoon sun
and starlight
please

I used to say I hated mornings. Then I became an early AM DJ for my first radio job and had to wake up at 4:00 AM Mon-Sat. I used to tell my audience, I hate mornings, they just come to early.

A powerful satire. On behalf of the ladies of the house or queens of their families you have registered your voice of protest.Excellent.

What a great poem! Well done. I, too, hate mornings, especially since I'm an insomniac.

I, too, am down with the night team! I have to drink so much coffee in the morning. I do the best that I can to function but in the evening, I really feel more like myself. Cool poem!

Most often, Time is a function of who you're with, Louisa (smile). What you need is that 'who' and a good Writer's Breakfast (smile)... Michael
