I (heart) the BCS!

I do not understand why everyone is so up in arms about the BCS. Clearly, the sages who choose the BCS poll are much smarter than us, which is why they get to choose the BCS. Now a lot of people are saying the college football should have a playoff like every other sport on the planet, but if they did, it wouldn't be college football. Part of what makes college football college football is arguing over who the National Champion should be. Why, if we had a legitimate champion, what would talk radio shows and self-appointed non-BCS worthy "experts" have to argue about? I actually feel sorry for schools in the lower divisions who don't get to let experts decide who the best team is. I mean, there have been several instances of teams poised for greatness who went into the playoffs and stumbled. Who wants that? Who wants sucky teams winning the title all beacuse the better team didn't bring their "A" game? As a matter of fact, I think not only should the champion be decided by the BCS committee, but all games should be. Why let reality decide such matters of grave importance? Reality sucks! In reality, the Appalachian States of the world beat superior teams like Michigan. We all know that the highest ranked team should always win, so why bother? We just print out a schedule, give it to the BCS committee, and let them decide the outcome of every game.

But why should Division I college football be the only sport to apply the wisdom of experts to? Why don't we just let experts decide basketball, baseball, and pro football as well? Just think of how many Super Bowls the Bills would have won under a BCS-like system. The Red Sox's curse could have ended years before 2004 under my plan. Consider March Madness. First off all, they call it "Madness" for a reason: It's crazy! Teams with no business being on the floor with clearly superior teams sometimes actually win. And everybody hates that! It upsets them greatly. If it didn't, they wouldn't call them "upsets."

As a matter of fact, I think we should do this with everything. Why "elect" a president? Why not just let a committee of...oh, I don't know....9 members, maybe, simply decide who should be president. I mean, it would save us the trouble of having to go down to the polling station and stand in line and think about who to vote for and blah, blah, blah. That's super-boring! It's much better to let experts decide. They're much smarter than us anyway, that's why they're experts!

So the next time you find yourself with an undefeated record going into a bowl game with no shot at the national title, or you find yourself 11-1 and getting leap-frogged in the polls by a team with two losses, be grateful. Because you are lucky enough to be playing in a system where reality can't get in the way.
