Your mother's eyes changed when it happened. I can't explain how, but I noticed it from the very start. They became brighter, as if a flame had been lit there and started to burn. That's the first time that I knew you were there. After that she began to feel sick all the time, early in the morning, with dizziness and nausea, the irrefutable signs of life within life. A smile lifted my heart as I felt you growing stronger. I didn't say anything at first. It wasn't necessary right then. It was our little secret for the moment. We giggled together. Mommy would find out soon enough, and so she did. We were shopping for groceries when she finally realized you were there. Suddenly, she felt you deep inside of her. She was scared and a little surprised. I was neither. I simply smiled and quietly guided her toward the light of understanding. A blood test confirmed your physical existence. Mommy was so happy. She had been waiting for you for so long.
I can feel you in my heart and in my soul. I hear you in my thoughts. I can't wait to see you. I can't wait to hold you in my arms and smell you. I'm reading to you every night, Orson Scott Card and Tad Williams. Tales of valiant knights and beautiful princesses, stories from my childhood.
In my minds eyes I see three circles joined in priceless graceless harmony.
Two full as the moon
One hollow as a crown
Two from under the sea five fathoms down
One from the earth deep beneath the ground
The whole a mark of high renown
Tell me what can it be?
That's my favorite line from Clash of the Titans, the princess and her riddle, "Mark and remember". We'll watch it together when you get here. I'll download it, along with The Labyrinth and the Never Ending Story. Oh how you're going to love Falkor the luck dragon and Atreyu, the young hero fighting to save the universe from the destruction of the terrible Nothing. I grew up with these stories. They inspired me. I hope they will do the same for you.
It won't be long now, honey. Take you're time and enjoy the comfort of mommy's warmth. Daddy knows how much it means to you right now. We'll be together soon enough. Until then, we'll have many nights of valiant knights and long conversations.
Love,
Daddy

Post a CommentWhat a beautiful statement to a child. Great work Evan...
This is the sweetest thing I ever read. Please save it for your child to read when he/she is old enough to appreciate it. And congratulations! Your life will never be the same once you hold that baby in your arms.
I don't think anyone could express the anticipation or the love any better than you have here in this emotional piece! Extraordinary!
Wow! Congrats:)
Congrats, Evan! There's nothing as joyful as becoming a parent.
Congrats to you and your wife
Awesome letter...I remember the birth of my first born like yesterday..it changed me forever..thank God...that was 19-years ago! Time flies man!
The first is so scary. But I bet you'll be a great Dad. When you're cutting the umbilicus, and you feel like crying, go ahead and cry. Nothing un-manly about crying at their first sighting. I've no advice for you. Some things you'll have to just learn on your own. Enjoy.
Your baby is incredibly lucky to have a parent so loving. You've written a letter that is a priceless heirloom, so moving - wonderful!
OH, this is Sooooo very sweet and moving. I'm sniffling a bit. More guys should share their feelings like this. Great work and CONGRATS! Enjoy the ride :D
