Here's what I have to say to that, before I even write the rest of this review. If you are going to see a SPOOF, you have to expect silly, sometimes completely stupid, humor. You have to expect slapstick and cheap jokes and random references out of nowhere. If you expect anything else, and you are disappointed with this movie, well that's your own fault! Especially after reading this review, you should know whether or not this is something you would like. Seeing a spoof when you know you don't like stupid humor, is liking seeing a Star Wars movie when you know you don't like sci-fi.
Minor Plot Details
4 orphans each come across a ticket to go on an epic adventure (yes it's a golden ticket... I'm sure you get the reference). They get to the adventure to find that Willy is quite crazy and intends to make them into candy! They work together to try and escape, and find their way through a wardrobe to Gnarnia where the White B*tch has taken over the land.
The rest of the movie spoofs Narnia the most, with a lot of other short references thrown in. Besides spoofing "epic movies", they also throw in a lot of today's culture (such as myspace).
What is an Epic Movie?
I learned a lot about Epic Movies in grade school, but unfortunately I don't remember all the keys that make an epic movie. Basically, it's a movie with a large, deep plot where there is a journey involved. Usually a hero has to overcome some fears and save the day. Narnia is definitely one, and most the spoofed movies seemed to fit this definition. Don't worry, I won't give which movies are spoofed. It's more fun to see them and figure it out yourself. However, if you haven't seen Narnia, you may not get all the jokes. My husband still laughed at a lot of things I didn't think he would get. But I laughed harder b/c I had seen Narnia and I understood the reference.
My Thoughts
Writing this review, I'm pretty sure I'll be one of the few giving this movie praise. I just found it entertaining! I enjoyed the references, and I also enjoyed that there wasn't an overload of references. They kept it pretty simple with a reference here or there that was just enough to make you think, and then laugh once you put two and two together.
One thing I will never understand is why Spoofs always insist on a few gross scenes, however this movie had fewer gross scenes than a lot of spoofs, and they went by fast that it doesn't affect my opinion of the movie.
The 4 orphans were awesome. We had Kal Penn from Harold and Kumar go to White Castle (as well as a whole lot of other stuff), Adam Campbell from Date Movie (spoofs must be his thing), Jayma Mays from a lot of TV shows but nothing big yet (she was cute and funny), and Faune A. Chambers from White Chicks (she was great!). I thought it was a great combination of actors, all with different personalities. Put together on screen they were fun to watch.
Then of course, you'll see random famous people thrown in to different parts. My favorite was Jennifer Coolidge from Legally Blond and American Pie. I think she is always great in her roles. You can just tell she's a very fun person in real life and she brings something extra to every movie she's in. You'll also see Crispin Glover, Carmen Electra, Fred Willard, and Darrell Hammond. It's just a slew of random appearances - most which I didn't recognize until I saw the credits role.
Conclusion
I just thought this film was funny, and that's all it was meant to be. I will gladly watch Epic Movie 2 when it comes out! I love Epic Movies, so it was fun to see them spoofed. If you like silly humor, and you've seen a lot of Epic Movies, this is a good one to go out and see. Enjoy
