I Look Out the Window and All I See is the Night

I. F. Zechariah

I look out the window and all I see is the night.

As much as I try, I look out hopeless again;

I look harder, failing to see the light.

So, I quickly close my eyes shut tight,

Only to reopen them, fearing to look within.

I look out the window and all I see is the night.

When fear encroaches, and the truth retreats out of sight,

I cringe and whisper my last amen,

I look harder, failing to see the light.

I cower hoping for relief from this terrible fright,

Crying for the end, so that I won't have to endure; and then,

I look out the window and all I see is the night.

Yet now I realize I cannot do this with my own might,

I must take refuge in the one who forgave my eternal sin…

I look out the window and all I see is the night,

Until I am washed with the blood; becoming upright,

So now I remember my redeeming light, and no longer fear on when:

I look out the window and all I see is the night;

I look harder, now seeing the light.
