I Lost It

Etienne J. Sarfelli

You told me you loved me in a text message.

While not the most romantic thing ever,

I thought that at least I had it in print.

It was something I could feel and see,

something concrete,

a hard copy to hold on the nights when we're apart.

But I lost it.

I'm as brokenhearted as I can possibly be.

Though I have the memory of the first time I read those words,

I will not be able to read them anymore.

There was countless other correspondence as well--

jokes and sadness and flirtations,

and days and days of idle chit chat.

There were numerous moments when I felt as though I were walking in heaven,

and I lost it all

We can recreate the moments,

and lord willing you'll tell me you love me again,

but the sadness I feel-

this gut wrenching feeling of loss

may linger forever and a day

You love me

you said so yourself,

and I thought I'd have proof of it to comfort me

But instead I went and lost it all.
