"I Love America" Festivities Planned for Elmer Thomas Park in Lawton, Oklahoma

This Free Event Will Feature Fun for the Whole Family This Fourth

On Wednesday July 4th, Lawton's First Assembly of God church will be holding "I Love America," which promises to be "the biggest family event of the summer," at Elmer Thomas Park at 3rd and Ferris. Fun, food, family and fireworks will all be a part of this exciting celebration of America's birthday and Oklahoma's Centennial Year.

The church has teamed up with a professional event consultant to bring these free festivities to Lawton. The festival is expected to draw a crowd of anywhere from 15,000 to 20,000 people. The gates open at 2 pm and that is when the fun begins.

For the kids there will be a "Fun Zone," which will include rides, rock climbing, and inflatable games.

Other free activities will include car shows, military displays, and two air shows presented by "The Canadian Forces Sky Hawks 20 Man Parachute Team." This team has a 36-year history of performing around the world under their trademark Canadian flag parachutes. An estimated 70 million people have enjoyed their breathtaking performances. The SkyHawks have been busily preparing for this demonstration season, performing over 3500 practice runs of their exciting parachute formations.

Concession stands will be packed to the brim with drinks, snacks and other foods, but everyone is welcome to bring their own ice chests with snacks and beverages as well as lawn chairs or blankets. The organizers want to remind you to drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and because of the recent rains and flooding, do not forget mosquito repellent. There will be bug repellent available at each of the gates as well.

At 7 pm, the "I Love America" Choir and Orchestra will perform, followed by guest speaker Dave Roever. Mr. Roever is a Vietnam Veteran who was seriously disfigured during the war. He is an internationally known public speaker who brings a message of hope and faith to his listeners.

State Representative T.W. Shannon and Lawton Mayor John Purcell will speak at 9 pm and the fun and excitement of the day will be punctuated by the "Concert in the Sky". This is a professional fireworks display, which has been choreographed, to sync with a one hundred-voice choir and full orchestra that will be performing patriotic tunes such as "The Stars and Stripes Forever", and "1812 Overture."

Elmer Thomas Park is located at 3rd and Ferris in Lawton. The gates open at 2 pm and the event will end at approximately 10 pm. Admission is free. Please remember that because of the prairie dog holes in the park, sneakers make the best footwear for the event. For more information you can visit the "I Love America" website or contact First Assembly of God at (580) 536-9325. No alcoholic beverages or personal fireworks are allowed.
