I Love the Cocaine Energy Drink

Sulli
In September 2006, a company by the name of Redux Beverages released a new, controversial product called Cocaine Energy Drink. From the get go, there has been massive media attention given to this product, mainly because of its name. Many people seem to think that if kids think it is ok to drink something called cocaine, they will also think its ok to snort something called cocaine. But if they thought about it, why would kids be drinking an energy drink anyways?

I recently saw Cocaine Energy Drink at a party store. Since it's the first time I actually saw it on store shelves, I bought a couple of cans. It comes in an 8.4 ounce can that is red in color, similar to the color of a Coca-Cola can. Across the top of the Cocaine logo a statement that reads "The Legal Alternative" is printed. There is also a disclaimer printed on the back of the can stating that individuals whom are pregnant, children, or sensitive to caffeine should not drink Cocaine Energy Drink. The ingredients list contains many energy boosting supplements, but in no way, shape or form, is cocaine actually one of them. AS with most energy drinks, vitamins B6 and B12 are present in huge quantities, 300% and 600% of your recommended daily values, respectively.

After looking more closely at both of the cans I had purchased, I noticed a slight difference. One just said Cocaine on it and the other said Cut Cocaine. The difference is Cocaine is hotter, and kind of burns your throat as it goes done. Cut Cocaine does not, and tastes similar to many other energy drinks on the market. The drinks themselves were both red in color. After some research, I have found out there this also one other version of the product called Free Cocaine, which is the sugar free version.

Furthermore, after over 8 months of controversy, Cocaine has been temporarily pulled from stores nationwide in May 2007. 7-11 was the first chain store to do it, claiming the drink promoted an image they did not want to be associated with. The Redux Beverage company then took it upon themselves to recall it from stores nationwide. The company hopes to have it renamed and back out on store shelves as soon as possible. I purchased my 2 cans on 6/13/07 and a small mom and pop store.

Moreover, Cocaine Energy Drink is said to be 350% times stronger than Red Bull, which is one of the strongest energy drinks on the market. After trying it, I believe it is stronger than Red Bull, but not by 350%. I did give me a rush, much stronger than that of most energy drinks. The taste was good too. The price was comparative to the other energy drinks on the market. I would definitely buy it again, if I can find it again!

In addition, I think it is genius of Redux Beverages to name a product such as this, with a term that would call so much controversy. What better way than this can you generate so much talk about your new product, so much free advertisement? The first time I had ever heard of this product, I was watching a nightly news show back in September 2006 and they were doing a report on it. Immediately I wanted to go out and try it. I figured if it has drawn so much attention from all directions, I wanted to see what it was all about. Finally I had my chance, and realized that in fact the big hype was over nothing at all. Just because it has a controversial name, it is still just like all the other energy drinks on the market pretty much.

I personally think that Cocaine sends the wrong message everyone. After all, one of the effects of the actual drug, is the burning sensation in the back of your throat. So what message are we trying to not only sell but put in the market as well!

I've not tasted this one but I do know it caused quite a controversy. from what I understand the makers of cocaine hired a legal team before they released their product because they knew they would deal with legalities.

Coca-Cola used to have Cocaine in it when it started out. Why not pull Coke from the shelves then?
