I Love Lucy: Episodes That Leave Me Scratching My Head

Robin Vinci
I am a huge classic TV show fan and "I Love Lucy" is one of my favorites. There are several episodes, however, that I just don't fully understand. I understand the episode, I just don't understand things about it such as the believability or how, what or why? I understand it's just a comedy show and meant for laughs. These are just questions I ponder.

Here are the top 10 episodes that I have issues with. Read it and you will understand my dilemma.

1. "Drafted"

This is I Love Lucy Episode 9. Lucy and Ethel are convinced their hubbies are about to be drafted so they start knitting going away presents. The husbands think the girls are pregnant.

My issue is with Fred and Ethel. Isn't Fred a bit old to get drafted into the army? And isn't Ethel a bit too old to have a child? Why don't any of them pose those questions? It's a funny episode but not one of the best as it was just too silly and unbelievable for me.

2. "The Amateur Hour"
I Love Lucy Episode 14. Lucy looks for a way to make extra money and baby-sits. She sees a job for $50 an hour and takes it. She does not know she is sitting twin boys who are terrors.

Why on earth does Lucy not realize there are two boys earlier? Why doesn't she call Ethel for help once she does realize it? She always calls Ethel for everything else. In this episode she just takes these boys nonsense and does nothing. It was too ridiculous and not one of the shows best episodes.

3. "Lucy Is Matchmaker"
I Love Lucy Episode 62. Lucy tries to fix up her girlfriend with a bachelor friend of the Mertze's but ends up as an unwitting third party in a love triangle.

Why does this creep think Lucy would want him? And why does Fred hide Ricky and believe Lucy is having an affair? As his friend, wouldn't he want him to know? Or has Lucy had other affairs viewers have not seen? The series of blunders is over the top and not one of my favorites.

4. "Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress"
I Love Lucy Episode 69. Lucy and Ethel are going to appear on TV. Both of them buy the same dress for the occasion. They agree to both by different dresses but neither does. They end up tearing each others dress up on the air.

I enjoy this episode very much but have a few questions.

Since they are going to sing the song "Friendship" why isn't wearing the same dress appropriate? I don't understand why it is such a big deal. Musical groups often dress alike. I must also add the dress is ugly on both of them anyway.

5. "Redecorating the Mertzes' Apartment"
I Love Lucy Episode 74. The Ricardo's help the Mertze's redecorate their apartment. They paint the walls and cover the furniture but of course chaos breaks out.

Lucy gets all the blame but Fred was an idiot for putting the fan on when the group is taking feathers out of a chair. Lucy tries to help and in this episode gets a bum deal. You can't blame Lucy for everything!

6. "The Diner"
I Love Lucy Episode 92. Ricky decides to quit show business, and the Ricardo's and the Mertze's decide to open up a diner.

For starters, Ricky quitting show business is totally unbelievable. The show is built around him being a band leader. How many people believed he would not go back to it? My second issue is anyone starting a new business would sit down and discuss more of the job details before opening than this group did. The Mertze's do all the work but it's their own fault for not realizing it from the start.

7. "Lucy Goes to Monte Carlo"
I Love Lucy Episode 152. Ricky tells Lucy that she can't visit the casino at Monte Carlo, but she and Ethel eat dinner there. Lucy finds a $1 chip and places it on a number in roulette and wins and wins. Lucy hides the winnings.

I don't care what I am told to do, if I win what must be $25,000 my spouse would forgive me for going into the casino. No one in the world would try to gamble it away. I was totally frustrated watching this one. If anyone out there wins money they don't want, send it my way.

8. "The Black Eye"
I Love Lucy Episode 48. The Mertze's won't accept Lucy's truthful explanation of how she got a black eye and think Ricky hit her.

Has Ricky ever been abusive to Lucy? Why would the Mertze's actually believe Ricky has become abusive? Is there something viewers should know about Ricky?

9. "The Camping Trip"
I Love Lucy Episode 64. Ricky plans to end Lucy's new idea, that the two of them should do everything together, by making her rough it with him on a camping trip. Lucy and Ethel have a plan of their own.

Why doesn't Ricky figure Lucy is up to something sooner? It's not like Lucy never pulls stunts. Ricky really looks like a dummy in this episode.

10. "Sentimental Anniversary"
I Love Lucy Episode 82. It's the Ricardo's wedding anniversary, and they want to spend it alone just the two of them. But the Mertze's had other ideas and plan a party.

Why don't they just explain they want to spend the night alone from the start? It's just crazy to spend your anniversary night in the closet. There are a few good laughs, but I thought it was a very silly episode.

So that's my list. I still love the show. Those are just some of the "things that makes me go hmmmm".

I completely agree about the Amateur Hour episode. First off why did they get to boys that look nothing alike. Their faces are different and one is taller than the other. Its hard to go along with the "can't tell them apart" joke as it is to be scared of rubber suited monsters.
Another thing. Why would Mrs. Hudson be so secretive of the fact that they are twins? I'm sure sitters have babysat twins before. Unless a potential sitter had heard of their reputation of "babysitter killers" no sitter would initially turn down the offer, especially getting paid five bucks an hour. Heck, back in the late fifties most women and girls who tried to make ends meet by sitting would like take the job even if they knew the boys like to burn sitters at the stake!
Speaking of which, NO WAY would any grown woman, even Lucy, fall for such a lame trick of "here we go round the maypole". Especially not after they had JUST SAID, "we'll be the indians and we'll BURN YOU AT THE STAKE". Once Lucy turned down

Here's my opinion on each thing you've said.
    1) Drafted - Ethel specifically says, "No they're not that hard up to draft Fred. He must have enlisted."
2)The Amateur Hour - The job is $5 an hour and once she figures out there's two, she doesn't think it's that big a deal until they tie her up. Then it's too late.
    3) Lucy is Matchmaker - Lucy is very beautiful and any guy would've wanted her if he thought he had the chance. And Fred probably didn't think it was his place to tell Ricky about it.
    4) Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress - Ethel and Lucy are both very proud and would feel weird if they were wearing the same dress (which I completely understand)
    5) Redecorating the Mertzes Apartment - you're absolutely right on this one
    6) The Diner - Ricky never says he's quitting show business, he just says he wants to own a diner.
    7) Lucy Goes to Monte Carlo - not everyone thinks gambling is a good thing to do, no matter how much money you could win
    8) The Black Eye - If you hear some

I always wondered just how old Fred and Ethel were supposed to be - and what their age difference was! ;)
