I Love Movies!

I Love the Scenery, the Music, the Lyrics, the Costumes, the Story Line, I Love it All

Mary Martin
My love of movies began in 1952 with "Singin' in the Rain." I was five going on six years old and this movie not only got my attention but tugged at my heart too. I can't say it was one aspect of the movie that caused me to become totally fascinated. I loved the music, the characters, the costumes, the color, and even the story line.

The music and lyrics of the title song, Singin' in the Rain, combined with the sight of Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor singing and dancing in the rain wearing yellow slickers and boots resonated with my child's view of life. I was captivated by the sight of adults actually being happy and enjoying the rain. This was a sight my young eyes had never seen. I wanted to join in the fun.

Good Morning was another song from the movie that appealed to me. I remember wishing that everyone had the words and music to make this greeting part of their day. Wouldn't that be great? It would be so much fun if everyone had such a cheerful attitude.

As a young girl in rural Ohio this movie brought a new dimension to my life. No one I knew sang or danced to express their feelings. In this movie I escaped to a place where even adults shared their words through song and dance. These characters danced alone sometimes and together at others but danced in ways that expressed exactly how they were feeling. Song sometimes accompanied dance and sometimes expressed the character's feelings with lyrics alone.

I remember singing songs from the move almost immediately. The scenes from the move popped into my head for days, months and years afterwards. Not a rainy day went by without me thinking of the movie and songs. Even walking through the rain causes me to think of "Singin' in the Rain" today.

Movies captured my attention and my appreciation at an early age. My love of movies has not diminished; I am just as easily drawn into the movie today as I was in 1952. Movies allow me to be ageless they allow me to flow freely from reality into fantasy and back. I love movies.
