I love to stay up to date with community festivals and events, especially the ones that advocate social change, self-growth and personal development. This year as well as previous years I participated in the Komen Race for the Cure Event. Many women in my family are breast cancer survivors, but sadly some are not. I like to get involved with causes and issues that can make an impact in the world. Recently I have even changed my focus as a photographer to specifically documenting the memories of community events like these.
People living in Sacramento, as traditional as they are, have great hearts and enjoy working for the betterment of mankind, those are the types of people I enjoy hanging out with. So if you don't find me somewhere in a book store, library, or artsy store. You can find me at a Sacramento Community Event, Festival, or Fundraiser. Some of my favorite organizations and events include:
Chalk it up is a nonprofit organization that advocates, supports, and promotes the importance of Art in Children's Education. Each year they hold a festival in downtown Sacramento where artists use a square area to express themselves creatively, at the end of the event judges review the art work and select a few winners. Some squares are also sponsored by local businesses to help raise funds for the organization. Being one who loves to express myself creatively, especially with sidewalk chalk, I enjoy watching the artists at work, and capturing the memories of the Chalk it up events in order to help them promote future events, raise funds, and bring about change for children and their need for artistic expression in their education.
As I mentioned above, I really love the Komen Race for the Cure Event each year, and each year I try and build a bigger and bigger team. It's a fun event that the entire family can participate in, even the guys. Participants get the opportunity help raise funds, which go to help women with Breast Cancer. Many can't afford a mammogram, but with Komen many women are able to get treatment that they would not be able to afford otherwise. After the walk, run or jog that you complete, there are informative booths about breast cancer, sponsored by local businesses. There is also an awards ceremony for the participants, and volunteers of the organizations.
I hope to photograph the event one year, but I'm always so excited to participate, I have not volunteered as a photographer just yet.

I volunteer off and on within the community with many organizations, and even non organizations, but simply really good individuals, doing good things for others. If you are looking for opportunities to get involved here in Sacramento, check out volunteer match and find a volunteer opportunity that suits your personality and interests.
