Tremper's in Fremont, Ohio was the Greyhound bus stop along USRT 20, but it was more than that. If it was Saturday night @ 11pm and you broke a "D" guitar string in the middle of a performance Tremper's in Fremont, Ohio had just what you needed. If it was 4am Sunday morning and you needed a cup of Columbian coffee, a newspaper, and a good cigar Tremper's in Fremont, Ohio had that too. If it was 4am and you needed an aspirin for a sick spouse or child Tremper's in Fremont, Ohio was the place for your solution. If you had a Saturday night date and needed flowers, candy, and protection Tremper's of Fremont, Ohio could help you out.
I guess if you needed it Tremper's had it. Remember this was before Walmart ever thought of going into business.... This was just customer service in it's purest form. This is hard to find today even in Fremont, Ohio. Yes I miss the old cronies that gathered around the counter for Columbian Coffee , a cigar, business talk, fish stories, and a piece of pie at Tremper's in Fremont, Ohio.
Today, as in many small towns, if I want to catch a Greyhound bus I must drive to Toledo or Sandusky. If I need a guitar string, a box of chocolate,a good cigar, or a bouquet for the Queen Goddess I must wait till the big box stores open. Tremper's in Fremont, Ohio has closed over twenty years ago but I still miss them. I miss the customer service and the smiles. I miss the candy case filled with bulk chocolate. I miss the selection of loose good cigars. I miss the fresh farm eggs. I miss the examples of pride in ownership, pride in community, and pride in service.
We are allowing the small businessmen and women to become an extinct group of folks. The pride of ownership, the examples of community pride are all slipping away in the dust of the big box stores. It is a loss that we may never recover from. I know we can live without the spotted owl or other wild life but can we live without the fruit of the small business owners?.... Mizpah ;-}}>

Post a CommentI also miss Tremper's! I lived in Fremont in the 70s. We used to buy comic books there when I was a kid. We begged our mom and dad to let us go in there while they did their shopping in some of the other stores. Thanks for the memories!
Don't you just love fond memories?

I feel you!
Reminiscent of kinder, gentler days.
What would we be missing?
Oh how I hear you. There are missing elements in my town and surrounding areas. We had a wonderful drug store with a lunch counter here when I was a kid. I miss it still. There was a small store where we could go in to get penny candy, a paper and many staple groceries. The building is even gone now, only a tarred spot where it stood. My boys will never know these kinds of businesses and good people who knew your name the minute you walked in to the store.
