As I grew older and got into middle school, I began to do my own research and studies at home on topics that would fit my eventual career choice. I could never seem to get enough books, and my personal library has grown pleasantly due to this.
Eventually the internet became valuable in its ability to find information with great speed. Soon, I began to think of school as a place to find more research topics but not as a place that had enough actual education for me. To be quite honest, I believe school to be going away from real education and toward a simple daycare into which parents place their children. Perhaps some day schools will do more than skim the surface of education, instead opting to delve deep into topics and as 'why?'.
In my personal studies I have come across an immense wealth of information and knowledge, yet I know I still have a long way to go. In fact, by searching in books and on the internet, I eventually came across Biomedical Engineering, which eventually became my major of choice. I found many possibilities and areas that science could help humanity through this field such as genetics, biology, and biochemistry. I wonder, could salamander regeneration be developed into a human trait? Or perhaps science could fix birth defects before they actually occur. Hopefully someday America will even give stem cell research and cloning for use of cells a chance to show its true possibilities for those individuals fighting for their lives, but right now we can only do our best with what we have available.
In my personal research, I have kindled a wondrous desire in the aforementioned science fields and will be well versed in each upon my entering college. I look forward to furthering science in order to help others, and have decided to dedicate my life to this quest.
Books and computers are not the only places for great learning however. I have also attended science conferences, genetics update conferences, and stem cell research updates, all of which give me a better understanding of the fields I wish to pursue.
Alternatively, my personal education out of the classroom also takes on the form of teaching others about the wonders of science and other interesting and beneficial findings. Through the writing and publishing of essays and short books, I attempt to show others the wonders found in my own searching for knowledge. I find that by teaching others we gain our own learning experience and a greater understanding of what we know.
I think Mark Twain's statement, "I never let school interfere with my education" could be phrased as an outlook on life itself. To be put into a more philosophical sense, "treat every moment as a learning experience, more than a simple school education, expand into knowledge otherwise unknown." I believe this statement revised to be the theme of my own life.
In the end, my goal is to learn more than anyone thought possible, and then to apply it for the betterment of humanity. Everyday I rise to a new lesson, a new experience that I am able to question and come to understand in full. School is not the end of our learning experience; it is truly only the bleak beginning to a brilliant outlook on life.
