I Need You NOW

Kathryn Neff Perry
My phone rang early that morning, which wasn't unusual. It seemed the past few weeks I had been "on call". Or at least it was starting to feel that way.
The only thing I could understand was, "I need you now". Then I heard her slam the phone down, and dial tone. I stood at the front door for a moment, hoping her house wasn't on fire. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary across the street.
As I made my way over to her house, I was trying to figure out what could possible be wrong. My mind was spinning. She has three small children, I'm a Medical Assistant and EMT, is one of them in trouble? Is she in trouble, is it her husband?
I walked through her front door. "Carmen", " I yelled, no answer. I walked towards the kitchen. Nothing smelled on fire. I'm reminding myself how Carmen panics at the least little thing.
"Where are you?"
About that time she rounded the corner, soaking wet, and motioning for me to follow her.
She led me into the bathroom. She had an indoor fountain. Water was hitting the ceiling. I leaned over and turned off the shut off under the sink.
I turned to face her, "What happened?"
She was wiping her face with a towel, "I don't know, I came in here and the water was shooting out of the faucet in the tub."
It was clear to see the hot water faucet had come off.
I pointed to the problem. "Do you have a screwdriver?"
She nodded, and headed out to the garage.
When she returned she said, "let me do this, okay? I always call you for everything. I need to learn how to do this stuff myself."
Sure, great, I'm thinking to myself.
"Just tighten that little screw right there", I pointed.
She nodded, and said, "I've got it under control."
She smiled, happy with herself.
"Don't forget to turn the water back on." I said as I waved and went back home.
A few hours later, she called again.
"You're not going to believe this, but we don't have any water in the bathroom."
"Did you turn it back on?"
"Yes, just like you reminded me. And I've waited, but nothing has happened. No water in the bathroom."
I walked back across the street. She was waiting at the door. "Thank you so much for coming back over."
"Show me how you turned the water back on", I said.
I followed her to the laundry room and watched her reach behind the washer.
"This is it, right, the main water faucet to the house?"
"Honey," I shook my head, "that's just the faucet to the washer.
I'm so proud of her. Now she knows how to turn the water off and on in the bathroom.
