I Remember You and Tears Come to My Eyes

Fathers Day Tribute to My Dad

Sondra C
He died many years ago
but my memories linger on
I thought about him
last week when I started to cough
and could not stop

I remembered
I had bronchitis as a child
and coughed and could not fall asleep
My Father came into my room
and told me he would help me to stop
my incessant coughing.

He warmed up a cup of milk.
It was not hot
It was warm enough to
melt a half a teaspoon
of butter.

The butter melted
and I drank the drink
my coughing stopped
and he hugged me
and smiled and
said
Sleep well my child
kissed my cheek, turned out the light
and I slept soundly all night.

Sunday mornings was a special treat
between only him and me
Saturday night, before he came home
he stopped at the corner newspaper store.

He bought the New York Sunday Newspaper and
the New York Journal.
Before he went to sleep at night
he folded them neatly and place them
at the foot of my bed.

I woke up every Sunday Morning
and smiled, took the funnies out of them
opened the pages wide
and smiled as I read all of the comics.

The little things like this
at times escape my mind.
I tend to think of the bigger
things that he and I never shared

I can think of more but the most important was
That he worked long and hard hours
so that, during the depression and afterwords
his family never starved.

I love you Dad and I always Did..
I just forgot how much!

Maybe I'll get done returning comments before we go to Conroe, TX on Thursday (and then I'll probably have tons more after that!)

What i meant to say was what a beautiful poem! it is so important to remember what we love about others instead of concentrating on what we don't like.
