I Rescind My Support of Charlie Sheen

LIVIN
Recently, I've been an ardent supporter of Charlie Sheen. I supported his suit against the Big Warner Brother, his reclamation of self and his break-out into independent mediation. (Not to be confused with arbitration, I use 'mediation' here to mean 'spreading in mediated fashion.') In other words, I was a fan of the concept of a media mogul, sans corporation. A man apart, if you will. We all know Charlie Sheen has re-invigorated the concept, but there's nothing new under the sun.

Today, I learned that Charlie Sheen is Duh, losing! At least, that's how I perceive it. According to an Associated Press release, Charlie Sheen has taken steps to trademark 22 Sheen-isms. At the root of this move, I see one characteristic that stands out - avarice. I understand the trademark concept and the reasoning, but the logic is flawed.

Among the twenty two catchphrases Mr. Sheen hopes to trademark is the phrase "tiger blood." Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't tiger blood existed since the dawn of tigers? In my mind, this is the latest in a trend of silly people thinking they have the right to own common words and phrases. It is patently absurd. Maybe I need to put this in terms Charlie Sheen will understand - Duh, Losing! And, wasn't 'duh' popularized in the 1980's? Or was it the 1970's? Either way, it's not new.

Charlie Sheen also hopes to trademark the phrase "Defeat is Not an Option." When I read that, I thought to myself, "I know I've heard that phrase a ton before Charlie Sheen ever uttered it." So, I googled the conglomeration of words. "Defeat is Not an Option" is a song by Jae Millz. (Beware of questionable lyrics that may not be suitable for children.) I wonder what Jae Millz would have to say about Mr. Sheen's trademark attempts.

I feel like I've heard the words "Defeat is Not an Option" uttered by numerous politicians who have, perhaps, been amidst a war. Unfortunately, it's hard to ascertain such information as the World Wide Web is filled with more recent uses of the term. However, the term is nothing new under the sun, as is the phrase "there's nothing new under the sun." Charlie Sheen is, in fact, losing! Sorry, pal, but it's time for an intervention. Anybody who thinks they can trademark common phrases or common words merely thinks they are holier than thou, which is ignorant. That's my violent torpedo of truth.

It's just sad. The more attention he gets, the worse he becomes.

In Yiddish, the fellow is "Gansa meshuggah." Compassion and pity are deserved perhaps, but certainly not admiration.
