I Saw Her Smile Once More

A Grandson Misses His Grandmother

As I walked home from school, the ambulance raced by

And startled me, my idle thoughts and dreams undone.

With flashing lights, the siren rent the calm blue sky

And drowned the happy laughter of the amber sun.

A lump grew in my throat, my footsteps increased pace

While hoping hopelessly that this was not the day.

I turned the corner. Soon the tears streamed down my face

When I saw Grandma, on a stretcher, whisked away.

I saw Mom at the door. She tried to hide her tears

I asked, "Oh will again I see my grandma smile?"

My brave grandmother had fought Parkinson's for years

Her joy had never ceased though she'd been sick a while.

Mom whispered, "Yes you will, you'll see it someday soon."

I meekly smiled and wondered why she was so sure.

It soon was dark, save for the bright stars and the moon,

And as I fell asleep I prayed I'd dream of her.

I dreamed she entered a magnificent hotel.

They told her that her room was on the top-most floor;

The way she walked and moved, I knew that she was well.

She turned and looked at me. I saw her smile once more.
