I See White People!

Coming from a Black High School to a Diverse University

JR
For those of you who grew up in a black school, attending University of Texas in Austin or Texas A&M University might be a big stretch. According to my classmates, I am the "whitest black person" they know. When I went to orientation, I am not going to lie...I was scared! The diversity overwhelmed me! I was so in shock at how nice "other" people actually are. People are a just people, that's what I learned. They don't bite.

So, all I can tell you is DON'T BE AFIRAID! In the age of Obama, no white, Asian, or Hispanic person is going to go all anti-black on you. You just have to be proud of who you are and respect other people's views. Respect doesn't always mean agree. In college, you will meet many different types of people. So don't be scared, learn from them. In turn they will learn about you.

During orientation at University of Texas at Austin, my roommate was Korean American. I'll admit at first I was a little apprehensive. I didn't know if she would like me or not. But she turned out to be an extraordinary person and we are still friends to this very day. It's ironic that I went to a Korean food store after this experience and tried some Korean Poe, I think it was.

Honestly, I know it's scary coming from a Black school like North Forest but take that experience and enjoy it. Remain true to yourself and if you do encounter a racist person DON'T stoop to their level. God made us all, so we are all equal in his eyes!

Interracial interactions are good. And learning about new cultures can enhance us as a people. We really need to open up to new ideas and new types of people. Don't get offended, I in the same boat. Scared. Excited. But I'm going to take my own advice and meet new people. You guys should too!
