I Need Serenity : Let's Be Bad Guys - a Review of the DVD

Emily Taylor
A space ship flying through the atmosphere, flames coursing over the window as it begins its descent. A piece of metal flaps for an instant and then breaks free, tumbling into space.

"What was that?!"

Fans of the cancelled space-western T.V. show, Firefly, will find themselves relieved and excited to see their favorite characters live again, if only for a couple hours, in the movie Serenity. Mal, the somber Captain, Zoe his first mate, Wash, the quick-witted pilot and mate of the first mate, the studious Simon and the clever Kaylee play their parts as well.

For those who have never entered the Firefly 'Verse, this is an opportunity to experience something completely unique and wonderful; a cast that acts as a family. The dialogue is filled with dry humor and witty comments that leave you chortling in your chair.

"Define Interesting."
"Oh my God, Oh My God, we're all going to die?"

Now out on DVD, there is quite the opportunity to spread the love that is Serenity. The DVD comes complete with special features, including deleted scenes and outtakes, commentary with the creator Joss Whedon, and a few infomentaries on how the movie was created. It also comes with an introduction by Whedon which points out the most amazing aspect of this film.

This is a film that is based on a cancelled TV series.

That should give you a clue as to how powerful a series it must have been. There was enough fan outcry that Universal Pictures felt the show warranted more than a second glance.

It isn't mine. The memory, it isn't mine. And I shouldn't have to carry it. It isn't mine.

A group of outlaws fights to save the life of one girl from a mysterious force of the law. A living weapon created by the government utters one word, the only clue to a major cover-up that spans all of space and the deaths of many people. The ragtag crew of the ship Serenity must race against time to uncover a secret locked away, a secret that threatens to kill not only the crew, but citizens of all civilized planets. And their mission is not without cost. Was it worth it? Only time will tell.

And hopefully Joss Whedon will let us in on that secret in a sequel or new series. And once you watch Serenity, I think you'll agree.

Shiny.
