I Smile

April Higney

I smile,

for the little things,

that life can take sometimes for granted.

I smile,

for the memories,

my little princess, enchanted.

The laughter,
smiles,

and the tear,

drifting away in colorful bubbles,

along the atmosphere.

I smile,

for the little things,

an afternoon walk, her little hand in mine,

and the bruised knee,

when eyes look at me,

asking as I place a bandage and a kiss,

how I could make everything fine.

I cry,

I cry because I wish I could,

but this isn't life's design.

I smile,

for the little things,

a fuzzy caterpillar, tickled delight,

playing in leaves, on a crisp Autumn day,

chasing with laughs to put on pajamas,

to tuck her in at night.

The laughter,

as she clearly vocalizes,

how she wants to discover things all on her own,

getting to be a big girl,

but I make her aware we all need someone sometimes,

she never needs to feel alone.

I cry,

I cry because I wish I could,

but life can cast a heavy stone.

The laughter,
smiles,

and the tear,

drifting away in colorful bubbles,

along the atmosphere.
