I SURVIVED

A Week Off

Kathryn Neff Perry
I don't remember how it came about. I believe it was strictly by accident.
Everybody in my family left, and I was alone for a week.

Amy was the only one who realized that I would be alone.
The week before she left she kept asking me if I would be homesick. I told her I would try to stick it out.

"I know it will be tough, Amy, but I think I can do it."
Somehow I made it through the week. Since my children were born, I think that was the first time I was alone for that length of time.

It was awful!

I came home from work every night to find the house just the way I left it.

There were no dirty dishes in the sink, on the counter, or on the coffee table.

There wasn't enough laundry for a full load.

I was able to eat cream of wheat every morning with milk on it. I always check before I go to bed to see if there is milk, and in the morning I cook cream of wheat, but the milk disappears sometime during the night.

I bought a box of Twinkies and ate one every night before I went to bed.'

I only ran the sweeper once because no one was there to track anything through the house.

I feel stronger now. It was a tough week, but I survived!
