I Voted for John McCain but Barack Obama Will Be My President

Honor in the Midst of Discord

Kristen Anne Harvey
There have been a lot of reports about the ugliness brought on by election 2008. People with bumper stickers, websites and T-shirts with Obama's pictures and the words "Not my President." How American of them -not so much.

Every election we get people who want to vote but don't want to accept the results. Politics bring about strong feelings- and it should. We in America get a hand in deciding the direction of our country for the next four years. We should make these decisions with our hearts and our minds. Weighing what is important to us as persons, families, communities, states and one Nation under God.

However many don't like to act like one Nation. We have legitimate differences in opinion that sometimes even threaten the religious foundations of this Nation. How do we resolve these differences? Like adults! Our founding fathers devised a way to make sure that the majority of the people controlled the direction of the Country. When and if we vote, we make our voices heard. The majority wanted the change that Barack Obama has promised. The people have spoken.

I did not agree with Obama. I think abortion is murder in the highest degree, that marriage is between one man and one woman as defined in the defense of marriage act, and that our right to bear arms is paramount to our individual security against forces that may come against us from within or without. I also think that stealing from businesses to give to the poor will only discourage business growth in the long term. I also believe that there should be different kinds of people on the presidential cabinet to give advise from different sides of the issue, not a group all cut from the same cloth.

I do not agree with the President-elect. But I will respect my Commander-In-Chief. Barack Obama has been elected by our peers as the next President of the United States of America. The judges he will appoint during his term(s) will most likely chart the course of domestic policy for the next fifty years. In the event of National turmoil our Nation needs to be united behind our President. We may not like some of his policies and worse some may not like the color of his skin but he will be the President. According to the Good Book a house divided will not stand. We need to stand tall and proud and show our children how to honor. We do not honor those we want to honor. We honor those who are in authority over us. Let's stop letting our differences divide us and make us vulnerable to attack. Let's act like true Americans and stand by our man.

I belong to a large church (over 10,000 members) with much diversity. The Sunday after the election our pastor had us all join hands as he prayed for our new leader and for healing of discourse over the election. That was a great moment! Good write, teammate!
