I Want to Be a Liberal

Anne Bryant
I want to be a liberal.

Today I am going to become a liberal. For many years I have been conservative. I have believed in all of the things that the Republican Party stands for, but today I am going to change. I don't want to be the "bad guy" anymore and I want all of the rights and privileges that are afforded to the wildest liberals among us.

I want the right to scream and yell at people that don't agree with me. I want to be able to change my mind hourly and to preach "diplomacy" while I am insulting everyone that has a different opinion than I do. I want to be able to believe that a guy that lies to his wife and fools around with interns has some integrity. I really want to believe that I can behave any way that I want and that if I am in the right group, it will be okay.

I want to be on the inside when my liberal friends figure out that the only way to have peace with radical Islam is to become one of them. Maybe I can be there when they figure out that all of the things that they are so in favor of like abortion, and gay rights might cause them to have their heads removed when they become a part of the religion of peace. I want to be close when they criticize the Islam leadership for their intolerance and I want to see how long they will be allowed to yell and scream about it.

I have believed in God for as long as I can remember. I have believed in creationism but I now realize that if I can convince myself to believe that I came from slime, I can act like slime and who can blame me??

I am tired of being responsible and it is hard sometimes to follow the "rules" in the bible. It would be easier if I could just believe that there is no God and that I am the only God in my universe. I won't have anyone to answer to anymore, and then I can treat people any way that I want.

I want to believe that louder is smarter, and I want to believe that I am smart enough to make the rules for everyone else. I want to be able to make people's moral decisions for them and to tell them where they can live and what they can do and who they can do it with. And if they disagree with me, I can call them stupid and intolerant. I want to be a liberal.

No Mark. I haven't been misinformed. I made my assertions based on the interaction that I have had personally with many liberals. While you may be qualified to state your own opinions, you are not qualified to determine what my impressions of the liberals I have met should be. As for liberalism being a philosophy, you may be right, but it has been my experience that the behaviors I mentioned often accompany the philosophy.

I'd suggest learning what liberalism is from other sources, as I fear you've been misinformed. I've seen most of the attributes you describe on both sides of the political spectrum. Liberalism is a philosophy, not a set of personality traits. I know of no liberal that would accept the theocracy that Islam presents. Any theocracy would be offensive to a liberal. You might broaden your sources, you clearly are misinformed.

I thought of your conclusion to this piece after the off the mark missiles fired on my Obama article "And if they disagree with me, I can call them stupid and intolerant. I want to be a liberal." Classic !

Nicely spoken! We should have a national rule that every Fourth of July, prior to the fireworks, at least the Bill of Rights should be read aloud to the crowd. Or maybe read them one at a time, then throw off some fireworks to punctuate?

Our society is further torn by political factions and who would rather fight than actually negotiate their differences.

Although many have turned against the founders of this great country they certainly knew during the founding of our country that, "a zeal for different opinions... have, in turn, divided mankind into parties, inflamed them with mutual animosity, and rendered them much more disposed to vex and oppress each other than to co-operate for their common good." Madison, Federalist Paper #10.

In reality though, "it is in vain to say that enlightened statesman will be able to adjust these clashing interests and render them all subservient to the public good." Madison

We can try all we can but it seems that there are many who have put on their blinders on and are only allowing one way conversations.

We may have differences in opinion but as Americans deep down we all have the same desires. President William McKinley said it best, "Our differences are politics. Our

A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.
