I was Asked to Resign Because of Religious Views

Amy Kreger
I recently took a job with a family website as a Christian blogger. I was encouraged, as part of my employment, to get involved in the forums within the website community, though I was not to be paid for my forum activity. I was excited about my job and especially about my opportunity to write helpful articles from a conservative, Christian perspective.

As I was surfing around the website, trying to find discussions with which I could get involved, I stumbled upon the abortion debate thread. I, as a conservative pro-lifer, was very interested in the discussion there. Since the thread was specifically a debate in nature, I saw no harm in contributing my opinion on the subject. After reading a very disturbing comment about the "self-righteous" and "judgmental" people who reject abortion, I proceeded to quote scripture and use it to under gird my dogmatic statement: Abortion is wrong. God knows the unborn baby and He condemns murder.

I saw no problem with stating my beliefs strongly in this fashion because, after all, I was a Christian blogger writing in a debate forum.

However, the following morning I had an email from my superior requesting that I either endeavor to be more "open-minded" and accepting in my interactions in the forums, or else resign.

I have heard of Christians losing their jobs because of their religious beliefs, I just never thought that I would be one of them. In a day and age when our society is so concerned with "tolerance" and "acceptance" I find that there is less and less room for conservative Christian beliefs. I did not condemn any individual, nor did I accost anyone personally or as a group. Rather, I stated what the Bible says about pre-born babies and also what it says about murder. The result: The command to be quiet or resign.

I resigned. How could I work for a company which accepted Christianity in name, but not in practice? If you take the ability to use the Bible away from the Christian, he has nothing left. The teachings of the Bible are the very legs upon which I stand, not just in determining right and wrong within the culture, but for direction and guidance in my own life. The Bible is the absolute standard, if you take it away from me, you take my very voice.

This country once had laws against sodomy and promiscuity. The Bible was our first text book. The Bible and God are inextricably woven throughout the fabric of our constitution, bill of rights and countless other founding documents. However, today I was asked to resign for quoting the Eternal Book in a debate forum about the ethical implications of abortion. Where is this all going?

  • I never thought I would be forced to resign from a job because of my beliefs.
  • Society seems increasingly hostile to conservative Christian ideologies.
Our country was founded on Biblical principles, but rejects them today.

You said it. If you take away the bible then christians have nothing left. But the bible is not based on fact that can be proven by any means. Which means that christians have nothing but the notion that two thousand years ago a man said he talked to god. Maybe you should start listening to your heart, where god actually is, and stop looking for someone else's version of the truth. Put the book down and see if you can be just as good of a person without it. I bet you can. And if you can't put the book down then let everyone else live their lives the way god tells them to in their hearts. Christians are all the same. My way or you are wrong. Keep your opinions to yourself unless you have been in the shoes of the people you are talking to. Don't quote a book that has no bearing on the true subject which is everyone does what they feel is right. Stop shoving your christian views down everyone else's throats.

I am sorry to hear this... You will be persecuted for righteousness sake. It's a fact. :D

I didn't think it was possible for a person to actually become more "conservative" but this article proves me wrong. Perhaps your former employer is as sick as I am of people quoting their interpretation of the Bible with no regard for context. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this but people like you are the modern-day equivalent of Pharisees.

Excellent article. Very well-written and enlightening. It is very appalling that a nation formed on the principles of God's word has become so incredibly Christophobic. I'm glad you wrote this. It's a great read!
